Fashion: What I'm Wearing

Work 27/9/2013

Channeled my inner Demi Lovato with this ensemble, to me she is the queen of the leather skater skirt :) I am well aware of how dying my Converse shoes are, I should really invest in a new pair....
(FYI top, skirt and necklace are all River Island, headband and earrings are H&M)

Fashion: September Best Dressed 2013

Autumn is coming and whilst some celebrating our embracing the deeper, dark shades of September some stars are still clinging onto the summer style although many have injected some Autumnal colour into their outfits.

*Daniel Radcliffe kill your darlings premiere in David Hart, george cleverly shoes
*Scarlett Johansson looked so fabulous at all her events recently it was hard to pick just one! I decided to go for this Atelier Versace gown she wore to the Under the Skin premiere, she is back looking like the super glam movie star she is.
*Dakota Fanning completely wowed me in this sparkling Versace ensemble that she wore to the Night Moves premiere. I think this is the first time she hasn't worn something 'pretty' or had her hair left down with a centre parting. It's such a stark difference and I think she looks ace.

*Dianna Agron smartened up a black vest top as she took a trip to ABC Studios with this gorgeous Oscar de la Renta skirt and Christian Louboutin heels, her dewy skin and golden waves offered a Californian cool edge to the chic outfit.
*Kate Hudson looked sensational at the iHeart Festival in this super hot purple in Bec & Bridge playsuit, the contrasting red-orange heels and lip is a fabulous yet simple where to make the purple pop even more so.
*Pixie Lott always wear fab shoes. She paired the silver Prada pair with a Chanel jumpsuit and patterned blue mini by Motel as she attended the Brits Icon Awards

*Kourtney Kardashian was the spitting image of Kim as she rocked a black lace Kardashian Kollection for Lipsy jumpsuit paired with YSL heels and a much-adored Charlotte Olyumpia clutch
*Shay Mitchell was another in black at iHeart, this gorgeous actress rocked a black dress by Ralph & Russo Couture with some gold detailing, smokey eyes and ombre shades worked wonderfully.
*Kate Bosworth shows how to work a LBD with style as she wore a Stella McCartney number and draped herself with Bvlgari jewels and Bvlgari Retrospective Opening, golden Hollywood waves and red lips complete the screen-siren outfit

*I love that this actress is starting to get more roles, Lizzy Caplan wore a sparkling and patterned midnight blue dress by Timo Weiland, the crimson colour of the dress matched beautifully with the sandals. (I had to steal a cheeky image from Red Carpet Fashion Awards as I couldn't find any online!)
*Kim Kardashian is back on board after the birth of baby North, wearing a chic nude and white ensemble that consisted of a Balenciaga bag, Celine coat and Alai sandals, I adore her new blonde locks to
*Jessica Alba wore a hot black Narciso Rodriguez mini skirt and boxy crop top paired with super cute Nicholas Kirkwood pointed heels with bow detailing, love that the shoes and clutch are both gold, I am such a fan of matching metallics

Best dressed was super tricky this month! But for me it goes to Scarlett Johansson, she looks so beautiful, everything about this ensemble from the soft hair to the black gown and green jewels is red carpet perfection.

Fashion: Uniform September

Now that I work in retail, every three/four weeks I have a set amount of money to spend in the shop on clothes and this becomes known as 'uniform'. Now, you may have noticed that I have been posting a few 'What I'm Wearing' posts here and there but I've now decided each time I have my new uniform I'll showcase it on here :) Not on me, obv, but just from the online site so you can see what River Island has to offer :D
We have even more cool stuff in now so I cannot wait for the next uniform week (and pay day of course) we don't get to use uniform on promos but the deals are always so great it's not really an issue.

Fashion: Emmys Best Dressed 2013

Dare I say that the Emmys was the best dressed red carpet event in some time?

*Kerry Washington wore an extremely romantic Marchesa gown which has some seriously pretty floral detailing and a gorgeous neckline
*Julianne Hough wore a shimmering grey Jenny Packham dress and some people disliked this look but I think Julianne makes it sophisticated yet sexy at the same time.
*Kaley Cuoco tends to let me down at these sort of events but she was absolutely breath-taking in this deep red Vera Wang creation, a matching box clutch and a dark eye with soft waves completed this glorious ensemble

*I have such a crush on Lena Headey, she rocked this Alessandra Rich black dress with white stilettos, I love her wavy up do and nude make up too, means the seductive dress and contrasting shoes do all the talking
*Taylor Schilling in a white Thakoon dress which offered some subtle side-boob styled with Hollywood waves and a red lip
*Kiernan Shipka is easily the best dressed thirteen year old about! The pretty actress wore a gorgeous brightly coloured floral Delpozo number with gold sandals, perfectly age appropriate.
*Rose Byrne showcased a much lighter hair colour which I actually kind of loved. She wore a blush pink Calvin Klein dress which was all very, well, Calvin Klein; simple but sexy. She paired with silver accessories and jewelry.
*Laura Dern is always on my list at awards ceremonies, this salmon pink, sheer and patterned Naeem Khan dress is a tricky colour to pull off but Laura makes it work
*Zooey Deschanel wore yet another powder blue dress this time by J Mendel, her heels were by my favourite designer; Charlotte Olympia. I really love the sex-kitten vibe she is giving off, have a lot of time for that BIG hair.

*Kate Mara was angelic in a white J Mendel dress, I love the comparison of the high split and long-sleeved top. Slicked back hair and clear platform peep-toes added the trademark Mara edginess.
*Guiliana Rancic was there for E! in a strapless sky blue Tadashi Shoji which had some serious silver detailing, love her sleek bob and that always spot on tan
*Michelle Dockery wore a red/oxblood Prada dress that I am surprised to say I love, it's very Autumnal which I adore and dip-hem in a gown is such a show-stopper.

Best dressed for me goes to Kiernan Shipka this was the trickiest decision I have ever had to make but this teenager is simply fabulous and her style gets better with time. I cannot wait to see what she'll bring for the rest of the year.

Beauty: LFW- 90s Grunge and Purple Haze

90s inspired grunge and purple haze take over the faces of London fashion week

As London Fashion Week kicks off there are two opposing beauty styles that have taken over the faces of the stunning models; the grungy 90s styling that was featured at Antipodium, Whistles and Mark Fast and the contrasting soft and vintage inspired pretty purple make up seen on the catwalks of Zoe Jordan, Holly Fulton and PPQ.
Georgina Graham of MAC cited that Antipodium used cult movie Clueless as inspiration as well as 90s grunge to offer a light-hearted and fun look. Guy-liner and smudge mascara worked as a stark comparison to the baby pinks, lime greens and ice blue colours. The hair was also 90s inspired with a slightly cleaner and neater take on the naturally parted grungy style; fresh yet messy with a great deal of bounce that doesn’t look too done.
Whistles was another that looked to the 1990s for vision, they used American cosmetics company Revlon and their trademark red nail polish for a smartened up take on the 90s raver. Paired with bushy eyebrows, nude lips and flushed cheeks the Whistles models rocked the flawless 90s make-up with ease.
As for Mark Fast, the Canadian knitwear designer showcased his funky fashion line in a punk inspired manner with dark eyes, dark lips and messy dark hair. Fast used bareMinerals beauty line to create the 90s gothic look and make-up artist Sarah-Jane Froom advised that Marilyn Mansen and a 90s Gothic rave-girl were the idea behind the dark styling.

On the other end of the scale Zoe Jordan used the pretty colours of Bourjois for soft, romantic beauty. Eye shadow creams in silver, lilac and blue paired with rosy lips and cheeks offered an easy to achieve pretty perfect look.
Also rocking purple were the models for PPQ with make-up from Maybelline, although they had a slightly more dramatic edge then those at Zoe Jordan the outcome was similar. Purple cream eye shadow represented a seductive, vampy side whereas the pink, faded lips offered a softer spring look.
The third designer to jump on the purple bandwagon was Holly Fulton who used the products of MAC and James Read to create a glamorous face. As with PPQ and Zoe Jordan the skin was fresh and a great deal of focus went on the eyes. Mauve, lilac and a lick of shimmer matched her pastel prints wonderfully and paired with the voluminous waves completed the 70s inspired set.

Fashion: NYFW- Vera Wang

Vera Wang: Sporty and Sheer for Spring

The spring 2014 line from Vera Wang was described to be “an Artful and Architectural Approach to clothes with a decidedly Athletic reference,” and this simple yet informative sentence perfectly sums up the collection.
The latest fashion line from the American designer is a sport-inspired set that still has the flowing romantic attributes featured in every Vera Wang fashion show. The two vastly opposing themes created a striking mix of flyaway dresses, sheer outfits and sport-like getups.

The styling was kept simple and supported the press notes as every model had her hair slicked back with a headband keeping her hair and/or fringe out of her face; all very gym like.
Fabrics were clearly sport focused with mesh being a strong feature, the thin material was reminiscent of baseball and basketball jerseys and appeared on many articles from full length gowns to cropped jackets. Silk and chiffon were also prominent and appeared as a basis for numerous ensembles as layering was key, these gauzy materials were often separated by mesh or net panels thus keeping the sport element alive.
Many of the shapes were also rather athletic; in particular the racer-back vest was seen on many of the models and although a rather masculine shape Wang managed to make it appear far more feminine by pairing with the sheer chiffon and silk as well as a great deal of sequins.

Wang used primary colours to showcase her designs; red, yellow and blue with black and white also making an appearance. The vivid colours played up to the sport-like component whilst the black offered a tougher look and the white kept the trademark romance of Vera Wang present. The chiffon flower detailing, melted sequin effect and breezy painted brush stroke pieces were all resonant of classic Vera Wang. Although there was a great deal of flowing fabrics and dreamy dresses every time you had a soft piece it was paired wonderfully with a sports style article of clothing resulting perfectly in an artful, architectural yet athletic fashion line.

Fashion: The Martini Sweater

La Roquette and Ethel Vaughn present the Martini sweater

The latest ‘It’ piece of clothing is a bright, brash jumper with a brilliant back story to match.
Created by two innovative masterminds of fashion; Katrin Weber and Fee Romero, the ‘Martini’ sweater is the most comfortable, cool and comical sweater you will ever come across.
One of the designers in question, Fee Romero, is currently part of the exciting fashion company La Roquette. La Roquette is an independent German fashion company that was founded in 2011 by four creative minds with professional experience in video, design, and photography. Since its launch just two years ago they have produced film and photo projects for numerous fashion and lifestyle companies.
Just one year before, in 2010, the 90s inspired fashion label Ethel Vaughn was born and this is where Katrin Weber comes into play. Ethel Vaughn is an urban avant-garde clothing company that focus on 90s style sportswear in bright colours with strong graphics; perfect for everyday life.

Whilst working together on a shoot for TISSUE magazine Katrin Weber and Fee Romero had struck gold, as part of the photo-shoot a varied number of women dyed their pubic hair in a range of rainbow colours and with this simple yet startling move the Martini sweater was born. Weber and Romero took inspiration from these daring ladies and designed this amusing yet brilliantly appealing article of clothing, the jumper was given the intriguing title ‘the Martini sweater’ due to the vibrant pattern closely resembling martini glasses.
The cosy but cool sweater is also reminiscent of the 90s Cosby era and combines bright, bold graphics with comfort; the perfect blend of on-trend style and much-needed warmth for coming winter months.
The jumper is also reversible with a quirky monochrome print on the other side, although completely opposing the vividly coloured ‘martini’ print it is still a wonderfully eye-catching pattern and is sure to get you noticed. You can check out both La Roquette and Ethel Vaughn on their official websites as well as their Facebook pages.

Literature: The Fault In Our Stars Review

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

The Fault in Our Stars (TFiOS) is the story of sixteen year old cancer patient Hazel Lancaster, the novel follows Hazel as she attends a support group her parents have begged her to attend where she meets the intriguing and charming Augustus Waters.
Everyone had been raving about this book on Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr so I thought I would give it a whirl.
Hazel Grace Lancaster is a smart and witty sixteen year old who simply wants a normal life but instead she is forced to deal with the horrific disease that is lung cancer. As her parents, a strong and kind mother and a sensitive but loving father, plead her to 'get out more' Hazel agrees, much to her own disdain, to attend the local support group. Whilst at the meeting she meets Augustus Waters, a young ex-basketball player who is currently in remission having previously lost his leg to bone cancer. As Hazel starts to spend more time with Augustus as well as his best friend Issac, a troubled young man who has been partially blinded by cancer, Hazel realizes how much of a profound effect one person can have on your life.
Sometimes you read a book that changes your whole perspective on life, sometimes it's just for a moment and sometimes its forever. TFiOS is one one of these books.
Of course it is not perfect and much like its female lead, TFiOS does have it's faults but whether you walk away from the story of Hazel Grace Lancaster full of happiness, anger or sadness, one thing is for certain you won't ever forget how it made you feel.
The strengths of this novel lies with the true to life characters and the funny, heart-warming and, at times, brutal dialogue. In particular the main lead Hazel is a fabulous female protagonist; she is a smart and sarcastic albeit a little self-righteous.
At times I would catch myself gasping and even giggling at the conversation and I felt a little guilty that I found their humorous take on cancer so hilarious but I soon realized this exactly what John Green wanted.
For many I think they may see the novel as a little pretentious and a bit on the 'lecturing' side but with all that in mind I cannot remember the last time I took so much away from a book.
I must add that although I was aware of the plot I don't think I truly understood how emotional it would be. It truly is a sad book but what else would you expect from a novel about teenagers who have cancer?
